Why You Need a PEN Fault & SPD Protection Unit for Your Tesla Wall Connector – The Tesla Gen 3 Wall Connector is a stylish, fast, and feature-rich EV charger. However, because it is designed for a global market, it does not come with built-in PEN Fault Protection or dedicated Surge Protection (SPD) required by UK electrical regulations for most installations.
Safety – To ensure your home, your car, and your family are completely safe—and to make sure your installation fully complies with BS 7671 (UK Wiring Regulations)—we install a compact, external protection unit alongside your Tesla charger.
What is a PEN Fault and Why is Protection Mandatory? – Most homes in the UK are connected to a PME (Protective Multiple Earthing) electricity supply. In this system, your property’s Earth and Neutral lines are combined into a single conductor (the PEN conductor) in the street. If this combined cable in the street is ever damaged or breaks (an “Open PEN fault”):
-
The electrical current has no safe way to return to the grid.
-
This can cause the outer metal body of your electric vehicle to become live with 230V of electricity.
-
Because the car sits on rubber tires and is not grounded, anyone touching the car while standing on the ground could receive a severe, potentially fatal electric shock.
Because the Tesla Wall Connector does not have a sensor to detect this specific grid failure, UK law requires us to install an external PEN Fault Protection device for outdoor chargers. This unit constantly monitors the voltage and will instantly isolate and disconnect your car in milliseconds if a fault occurs in the street, keeping you completely safe.
Guarding Against Power Surges (SPD) – Our add-on units also include a Surge Protection Device (SPD).
-
Lightning strikes or switching spikes on the local grid can send sudden, massive high-voltage surges into your home.
-
Sensitive electronics like those inside your brand-new Tesla Wall Connector and the advanced computers inside your electric vehicle can be easily fried by these spikes.
-
The SPD acts like a lightning-fast safety valve, diverting that excess energy safely into the ground before it can damage your property.
The Bottom Line – By installing an external SPD + PEN fault unit, you avoid the need for us to dig up your driveway to install ugly copper earth rods. It guarantees a clean, legal, and 100% safe installation that protects your electric vehicle.
