Consumer Unit (Fuse Board) & PEN Fault Requirements

Your consumer unit must have a spare way available to add a dedicated EV circuit. By law, all new EV circuits must be protected by an RCD and Surge Protection Device (SPD).

Unlike units with integrated protective earthing, the Tesla Wall Connector Gen 3 requires an external PEN Fault Detection Device (or TT earth conversion) when installed on a PME (TN-C-S) earthing system to comply with BS 7671 regulations.

If your current setup requires additional circuit or PEN fault protection, we offer three simple solutions:

Install an external PEN fault detection device alongside an SPD in your existing setup.
Install a secondary, dedicated mini consumer unit equipped with integral PEN fault detection and SPD protection.
Upgrade your main consumer unit to a modern, fully compliant version with integrated PEN/SPD protection.
