What You Need to Know – Your consumer unit (often called a fuse box) is the beating heart of your home’s electrical system. It controls the flow of electricity to every room and keeps your property safe. However, as technology advances and our homes demand more power, older units simply cannot keep up. Here is how to tell if it is time for an upgrade, and how a modern unit benefits your home.

When Does Your Consumer Unit Need Upgrading? – If you notice any of the following, we highly recommend upgrading to a modern board:

  • You still have old ‘fuse cartridges’ or rewireable fuses: If you have to replace a piece of wire or pop a ceramic cartridge when a fuse blows, your system is heavily outdated and lacks the split-second life-saving protections required today.

  • You have a plastic consumer unit: Under modern UK safety regulations, new consumer units must be made of non-combustible metal to contain potential electrical fires. While existing plastic units aren’t strictly illegal, upgrading to a metal unit vastly improves your home’s fire safety.

  • Your wiring is old and deteriorating: If your consumer unit is decades old, there is a high possibility the cables inside your walls are too. As insulation on old wires deteriorates, it creates a serious fire hazard.

Modern units feature incredibly sensitive switches called RCDs and RCBOs. These devices monitor your electricity in real-time and will instantly cut the power in milliseconds if they detect a fault, keeping you, your family, and your home completely safe. As the saying goes, it is always better to be safe than sorry!

What are the Benefits of a Modern Consumer Unit? – Upgrading your fuse box is one of the best investments you can make for your property. Here are the main perks:

  • Maximum Protection: Modern consumer units monitor every individual circuit and appliance in your home. This means a fault in your toaster won’t plunge your entire house into darkness, and dangerous faults are stopped before they cause damage.

  • Lower Insurance Rates: Insurance companies know that older consumer units carry a much higher risk of electrical fires. Upgrading your unit can often help lower your home insurance premiums.

  • Higher Property Resale Value: Buyers look for safe, turnkey homes. A modern, compliant consumer unit proves the home’s electrics have been maintained and are ready for modern living, increasing buyer confidence and property value.

  • Full Legal Compliance for Landlords: Every new unit we install comes with an official Electrical Installation Certificate confirming it meets the latest regulations. If you intend to rent your property out, having a modern, highly rated board makes passing your mandatory 5-year electrical safety checks (EICR) a breeze.

Terms and conditions – Base price consumer unit size of x10 circuits. If you require a larger consumer unit additional circuits are charged at £50.00 per circuit. If we come across any unforeseen issues with the existing wiring system, fault finding may be required to resolve the issue. This service is charged at £100 + vat per hour.
